Experiencing Reality

"What was it about that night?
Connection, in an isolating age.
For once the shadows came into
light.
For once I didn't disengage."
from "What You Own"
RENT
I think that I might be starting to understand the whole "reality show" craze. I think we as individuals are salivating to live and experience LIFE. To step out of our mundane existance and live another life to it's fullest. Television offered a good trip for a while with it's regular fictional, scripted, typically wrapped up in the course of an hour lineups. We enjoyed a good story, but we knew that we could never BE the captain of the Enterprise, we could never BE the unconventional cop who never played by the rules, we could never BE the lone soldier who fought against an entire third world army, we could never BE the dashing bachelor who meets the one woman who turns his world on it's ear - etc. etc. ad nausem.
Now with reality television (still scripted mind you), we see lives that ARE within reach. Real people - DOING! We are connecting with other individuals in a Real existance. We look at that and say I could accomplish that kind of life, that kind of excitement. But we stay safely on the other side of the wall.
Today, we have now seen the coming of blogs and vlogs. These I think will take this experience to a whole new level. We are now connecting to other people's lives and being encouraged to actively take part in the connection. We have moved from our LAZY-BOYS to our computer chair and put OUR lives out there for others to experience. Now it's our lives that are touching others. We. Connect. Back.
