What Remains?

http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=4515281
I heard this on NPR this morning and was inspired by the end of the commentary. The writer states that the individuals who stand out are the artists in a society. Those with lasting influence are the writers, artists, and musicians over a time. I would submit that they are THE lasting influences. How many people remember offhand who the rulers were during Shakespeare's time , Or who was president while Dali waxed his mustache? Certainly we can sit for a second and figure it out, but who more readily comes to mind.
Miller and Thompson will forever be remembered by their work. By what means will we be remembered? Our works(or lack thereof), whether famous or infamous, will be the hinge. When I step out of the moral coil what canvas, publication, byte, or note will remain to say " I was here"?

Cracked Window

This is a crafty installation I did to advertise the new softball season coming. I cut a softball in half and stuck it on two sides of a glass door in a high traffic area. It got a lot of notice

Multiple Mediums

This is another version of what I did yesterday. The obvious difference is that this is a painting and that it is only 1/4th of the other version. I'm not a painter (obviously), but I wanted to broaden my horizons and try something new than just digital art. This will never hang on a museum wall, but it will look fine in my mind because it is pushing me elsewhere. and elsewhere is where I want to go.

Today's creation

I don't do abstract very often. But I've been thinking about an inner struggle lately between my heart and soul. Both sides waging war for control. This is what came of it.

Created Today

This is an image I created after reading Creative Advertising.

One moment of inspiration

I'm still trying to figure out how to post some pics of my work. So far it's not working. I spent yesterday visiting my old haunts trying to find something that would speak to me. I visited the art museum where they were displaying the art of Jim Suddath. A man who paints with mud. In the back woods, the man takes - say - and old piece of plywood and uses different shades of mud to compose his pieces.
The one that really spoke to me was "John the Baptist." While everyone has seen the chapel High art paintings of Saints and the like this one was so "elemental" that it really said to me " if John had asked to be painted I think this is how it would look." The gritty unkept prophet he was.

The first sentence...

I was prompted today to write the first sentence in what would be my novel. I'm no writer per-se but I had to start it with "Hello, my name is David and the future is out to get me." It seems that phrase that I picked up somewhere in the past has always haunted me. No matter where I go or what I do the future is always right there in front of me. It scares me at times. But the next thing, the next action, is always right there.
the eternal "Here comes what's next..."
That first sentence would have to be written moment to moment. describing, defining, illuminating everything that is so subjective to THAT moment and not in relation to all others.
Also, the first sentence HAS to be written. The second can never come first. All things in order.
What I think I need to get at is the necessity to live in the first sentence. The others will come in succession. What has been written is in permenant ink.
I've looked ahead so often I miss the individual beauty of the first sentence. And in trying to look ahead I see nothing because that sentence is yet unwritten.
So I miss creativity inspired by the moment. I think it's time to look around.

Where is the key to inspiration?

In the days of the Romans they looked toward a group of sisters called the "Muses" These ladies embodied all things inspirational as far as the arts went. I want/need to go on a journey a search to find my inspiration. What makes me passionate? What is it that makes me stop in awe? What is it that drives and artists hands to madly grab a paintbrush, a pencil, a chisel, a laptop, a camera - - and HAVE to capture that moment, vision, emotion in time so that others can have that glimpse into something so intimate that it paradoxically has to be shared.

I had that once- I think...

I once lived in a realm of creativity. Everywhere I looked there was some - - THING that made me stop and take notice. MADE me take it in and evaluate it. When did that go away? Sure I've grown, gotten married, become a father. All the things that are cliche when people speak of happiness. While I DO love my wife and son, and am forging a marriage and sculpting my child, My soul still aches for something out there I feel I've left undone/undiscovered.

On a lark I bought this book that is a pseudo journal. It goes through each day with something strange to do. Yesterday it asked to plan out where we want to go in the world arranged by color ( a tame instruction compared to the rest of the book) and I colored in most of the world on my That's where I wanna go list. I wonder if I will ever make it out of the country just once. To see and experience sites and cultures that I've never been exposed to before.

There has got to be something out there...

Welcome

welcome Visual I.V. I'm not sure how you found this place but feel free to say what you will. I'm probably just going to drop my thoughts and feelings about my search for inspiration. I'm a graphic designer, which to some is nothing more than a wannabe artist. I've used many different types of mediums in the past from charcoal to performance art. Lately I've lost a great deal of inspiration and am looking for the means to a muse. This blog I hope will be able to help jumpstart some creativity. So here is my life. Open to the public view. Read, respond if you like. Perhaps posteritiy will find some strange archeo-socieological intrest in this.
